Item 712 Tech Team Bed Frame Extension
When I went to connect the headboard to my bed, I found out the frame was too short.
At first this appeared to be an insurmountable issue. After going online I found out that many people have exactly the same problem and it is relatively easy to fix. What I did was purchase a bed frame extension set. This is a neat item. It consists of left and right hand extension rails, each with a universal fit bracket welded securely to the end. If you look at your bed frame with the box spring placed inside of it, you will see that one end of the bed frame has a bracket that makes it easy to attach a headboard or a footboard, but the other end is about a foot short of the end of the box spring. This of course makes it impossible to fit either a headboard or a footboard in place. This extension kit solves the problem. The kit arrived with both the left and right hand extensions plus all the necessary hardware. It is simply a matter of making the appropriate measurements, aligning the extension kit on either side with the appropriate holes in the bed frame (In my case the holes were not in the perfect location so I had to drill additional holes in the frame. If the holes in the bed frame do not line up exactly with the holes in the extension set and you need to drill holes, the best tool to use is a variable speed rechargeable drill. Hopefully you have a drill bit index that has HSS (High Speed Steel) drill bits appropriate for drilling metal. Using drill bits that are meant for wood will accomplish two things. First, you will get no result and second, you will ruin the drill bit. Select a drill bit that matches the size of the hole in the extension set. If you are even a little bit handy, drilling the hole should not be a big problem. What you should do is align the extension set exactly where you want it and mark the center of the hole, and then use your drill to drill the hole. Needless to say, you should wear appropriate ANSI and OSHA rated eye protection when you are performing this procedure. Once the hole is drilled, it should be an easy process to use the screws that are supplied with the set to attach the extension. Make sure everything is tightened a little bit more than snug so that it doesn’t loosen and come apart! This was not a big problem), then I secured the extension rails to each side of the frame, lined up my footboard, and fastened it in place. I put my box spring back and I was in business. It worked out to be a quick effective solution.
You will find that headboards and footboards come in different types. The two most common are the ones that have legs that extend to the floor, this is where they get their support. These tend to be large and heavy compared to the other type, which are suspended off the floor and are supported by the bed frame. Solid wood headboards can be very heavy and usually are of the type that extends to the floor. Padded footboards are usually less than 20lbs. and can safely use the bed frame to suspend them off the floor. I have found that these extension sets can accommodate either type of head or foot board.
Now that you have finished the project, you can stand back and admire the job you just did. Put the mattress and bedding in place. It is now time for nighty night.
