Battery Replacement Tips on a 2007-2017 Ford Expedition

This is a quick lesson on how to replace the battery on a Ford Expedition. You’re going to need to replace the battery in that thing especially if it’s like six years old and you get stranded and it goes click, click, click, no juice.

You will need to have a ¼” ratchet and a 5/16” socket. The bolt that holds the battery down beside the battery is 5/16” as well so you can put the socket with an extension right onto it. The first thing you’re gonna want to do on any vehicle is to disconnect the negative. If it gets a little stubborn you can always use a flat head screwdriver or something and gently pry up and it should pop off for you. A better choice is to use a battery terminal removal tool. They are made by several companies such as Shummacher, Autoboo, Menkey, OTC, Gearwrench, and Tech Team https://www.amazon.com/Windshield-Adjustable-Extraction-Tech-Team/dp/B0812C3XX4/ref=sr_1_73?m=A39RY9ES5UNUVP&marketplaceID=ATVPDKIKX0DER&qid=1580225925&s=merchant-items&sr=1-73. This tool will allow the cable to be removed without damaging the lead post or battery. Now that the negative is free, remove the positive and then push it to the side.

What you can do is you can kind of pry apart the ends of the lead clamp on the cable end a little bit and then gently pry up and then can move the positive battery cable to where it’s not going to come back and hit something. Now that the battery’s disconnected, if you have a bolt that’s holding down the battery to the tray, you’re gonna want to remove that next and put that aside.

When the battery is free you can remove it by pulling it up, and that may be a little heavy as it’s got some weight to it. When you put in the new battery make sure you slide the battery in so it goes up and under the lip. Now take the new battery and slide it into the tray under the lip and make sure it’s tucked in and check the battery to make sure it’s secure then reconnect the cables. Grab a piece of sandpaper or a battery terminal brush and clean it (you can get it pretty much any parts store) to make sure that they have good contact and also clean out the middle of the battery cable clamps. You want everything to make a good contact, so it charges correctly. You want to make sure it’s nice and tight. Then connect the negative.
